Pharmacy service cost inquiry

Nick Jones

Mini Abstract:
Prescription services provided through community pharmacies in England are remunerated at a level set by the Department of Health (DH) and the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC). In 2009 PwC were commissioned by these organisations to undertake a Cost of Service Inquiry to determine the total cost of operating community pharmacies and, through the application of economic theory and information from the pharmacies themselves, allocate these costs between NHS and retail services. A forecasting model was then built, making use of econometric cost driver analysis, to estimate annual costs from 2010/11 to 2014/15.
