Mahmood Shafiee

Dr Mahmood Shafiee (BSc, MSc, PhD, CEng, MIMechE, MIAM, MAIM, MORS, FHEA, PGCAP) is an internationally recognised thought-leader in Engineering Asset Management discipline. Over the last years, he has worked to position Cranfield University as a globally recognised research institute in the areas of:
•       Reliability Engineering
•       Risk Analysis
•       Maintenance Engineering
•       Asset Condition Monitoring
•       Residual Life Prediction & Extension
•       Structural Health Assessment
•       Degradation & Preventive Maintenance
•       Decision-making under Uncertainty
•       Warranty and Service Reliability

Prior to joining Cranfield University in 2013, he worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Chalmers University—one of Sweden's largest and most highly acclaimed technological universities, where he undertook research on two multi-disciplinary projects about improving maintenance efficiency of "Offshore Wind Farms" / "Railway infrastructures". Funding for the position was granted from Chalmers University of Technology and it's area of Advance in Energy/Transport, sponsored by a number of Swedish agencies, e.g. Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndegheten), Swedish Traffic Administration (Trafikverket), Swedish Wind Power Technology Center (SWPTC), Vindforsk - Elforsk and several industry partners, e.g., Göteborg Energi AB, Vattenfall, etc.

During his career at Cranfield University, he has been Director of several MSc courses. He leads the MSc modules: “Safety Risk & Reliability” ; “Offshore Inspection” and “Asset Risk Management”. In total, these modules have been attended by more than 1,000 learners from across the university during the last years. Based on excellent feedback from students, Dr Shafiee was awarded twice the Student Led Teaching Award (SLTA) at Cranfield, once in 2014 as the Most Interactive Lecturer and another time in 2015 as the Best Lecture in school. He also was nominated in 2016 for the best Research Supervisor. The number of his scientific publications has considerably grown over the past four years. He has authored +80 publications on “Engineering Asset Management” in top-ranking journals and in major conference proceedings (he is the first and corresponding author in +50 of the publications). His papers have won the “best paper award” in the years 2011, 2015 and 2016. The total number of his citations in scientific databases exceeds 600, and he has the h-index of 14 and i10-index of 20.

Dr Shafiee has so far managed several National and International projects, worth over £2M, including:
•       Reliability Centred Maintenance in the Oil and Gas Industry Sector (2005-2006);
•       Reliability, Maintenance and Warranty Analysis for Second-hand Systems (2006-2010);
•       Life Testing, Prediction and Extension of Offshore Energy Infrastructures (2010-2011);
•       Maintenance Outsourcing in Railway Transport (2010-2011);
•       Decision Support Systems for the Optimal Maintenance of Wind Power Plants (2012-2013);
•       Progressive Degradation of Rails and Wheels (2012-2013);
•       Benefits of Condition Monitoring in Offshore Wind Foundations (Offshore Wind Accelerator) (2016-2017);
•       Predictive Maintenance to Achieve Higher Levels of ATM Availability (2016);
•       Designing Steel Composition and Microstructure to better Resist Degradation during Wheel Rail Contact (2015-2017);
•       Process Plan Reliability and Maintainability (2014, 2015, 2016);
•       Engineering Management and Reliability Engineering in the Oil and Gas sector (2017).

Dr Shafiee has established an international reputation for his high quality research in the field of “Engineering Asset Management”, documented by a strong publication record. His research papers have been published in top-ranking journals and major conference proceedings, and have received very high numbers of citations. His paper on “the investment in reliability improvement program for warranted second-hand items” was nominated as the best paper of 2011 in IIE Transactions (IF: 1.463) by Taylor & Francis Group. Another research of him, entitled “Maintenance strategy selection problem: an MCDM overview” was granted a “Highly Commended Paper Award” by the Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering, Emerald Group, 2015. He has so far been awarded several honours and educational scholarships at the national and international levels (e.g. University of Alberta 2010; Rutgers University 2010; City University of Hong Kong 2011; Chalmers University of Technology 2012). He presently serves as an Associated Editor and a member of Editorial Board in two International Journals and as a reviewer for +50 international journals.

Dr Shafiee has been plenary speaker and programme committee member of over twenty international conferences across the UK, USA, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Spain, etc. He sits as Chair of the Energy Committee on the European Safety and Reliability Association (ESRA) and also is a member of the Offshore and Upstream Engineering Committee in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) He is an active member of professional societies, consortia, and volunteer organisations, such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) ; Institute of Asset Management (IAM) ; Member of Institute of Mathematics and Application (IMA) ; Operational Research Society (ORS) ; Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) ; Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM) ; Higher Education Academy (HEA), etc.
