Membership Benefits

You have visited our website, so have you also considered joining the OR Society? There are many advantages. As a member of the OR Society, we would help you get up-to-date with current developments in O.R., and keep you in touch with other professionals working in your area. The Society will also advance your career by helping you develop the skills you need, and provide information about job vacancies.

To do this, we offer various services:

  • Online facilities
  • Publications
  • Regional Societies and Special Interest Groups
  • Conferences
  • Training, and
  • Job adverts

Online Information

The members' resources on this website offer many facilities to enable members to find the information they need, share ideas and experiences, network and keep in touch with developments. These include

  • A Document Repository, an easy to use facility enabling members to share with other members their client or conference presentations, handouts, working papers, case studies, datasets - in fact, any O.R.-related documents they want to share;
  • Members' visible profiles, which can be searched to find members with particular experience or expertise (see Find Other Members);
  • An online Forum (coming soon), where you can express your views on any O.R. related subject, and read others’ views in turn.

Also on this website, all our publications are available online free to members, plus many other technical journals published by Palgrave.

Publications

Every full member of The OR Society is currently entitled to receive at no extra cost any one of The Journal of the Operational Research Society, OR Insight or Inside OR in printed format; the other titles may be purchased:

Also, the INFORMS bi-monthly publication, OR/MS Today, is available to members at greatly reduced rates.

Regional Societies and Special Interest Groups

Regional Societies organise regular meetings which are a good way to keep in touch with other O.R. people in your locality. The OR Society also organises around 20 Special Interest Groups in application areas as diverse as Agriculture and Health and technique areas from Forecasting to Mathematical Programming. These Groups are open to all ORS Members, free of charge.

Some study groups and regional societies have emailing lists. Sign up and you can receive news of their meetings by email!

Conferences

Membership also gives you reduced prices at Europe's largest national O.R. conferences. The ORS Annual Conference attracts delegates from all over the world. It's an excellent way to keep abreast of all the new ideas and to meet others working in the O.R. field. The Young OR Conference is held every other year giving young Operational Researchers a chance to meet, share ideas and present their work in a friendly, non-threatening environment.

Training

As a member of the OR Society, we bring you the skills and knowledge you need through:

  • Training Courses (ORS Training offers one of the most comprehensive O.R. training programmes in the world with courses available in a wide range of topics)
  • Informational material (The ORS has a wide range of materials which have been produced in order to meet the objective of promoting the awareness of O.R.)
  • Library (The OR Society library has 1500 books and over 80 journals on OR and statistics. It is located in Brunel University, and members are able to make full use of all of Brunel Library’s other printed resources - that’s over 400,000 books and 2,000 journals)

Job Adverts

The Society provides the most comprehensive list of O.R. job opportunities in the UK and this is availableon the website. Adverts for these jobs are displayed in either Inside OR or this website. In addition, the Society runs an Annual Careers Open Day at which students can learn about O.R., find out about the educational opportunities provided by postgraduate courses in O.R. and learn about career opportunities in the subject.
