AGM Presentation

Data science for public good: Government-scale data science to support policy and public services

Speaker: TomSmith, ONS Data Science Campus

The Data Science Campus (https://datasciencecampus.ons.gov.uk/) at the UK’s Office for National Statistics in Newport works at the frontier of data science and AI – building skills and applying tools, methods and practices– to create new understanding and improve decision-making for public good. Our goals are to investigate the use of new data sources, including administrative data and big data, for public good and to help build data science capability for the benefit of the UK.

Tom will talk about the work of the Campus, examples of how data science is being used across government to support policy-making, operations, public services and statistics, and also compare/ contrast the roles of data scientists, operational researchers, and statisticians.

Tom Smith is Managing Director at the Data Science Campus, biography at https://datasciencecampus.ons.gov.uk/author/tom-smith/
