Ongoing and Previous Charitable Projects

In recent years The OR Society has awarded grants in excess of £100k to a variety of projects carried out in pursuit of the Society's charitable aims, including the following.

  • Research into how those involved in OR may become more successful at persuading decision-makers to accept and act on arguments based on numerical evidence. The report is available (below).
  • The development of web-based software for teaching soft OR to MBA students.
  • The development of multimedia software to introduce school kids to OR.
  • Research into the factors making for success or failure in O.R.. The results of this project, which have been published in JORS and Inside O.R., have attracted worldwide interest.
  • Research into the scope for using OR to improve assessments of the environmental impact of major projects.
  • An investigation to determine how advanced education in OR can be sustained in the light of cuts in government funding. The report is available (below).
  • Visioning the future of OR with a view (inter alia) to determining future directions for OR education. The report is available (below).
  • The development of web-based tutorial materials on important new application areas for OR.

The results of all projects are available below or in the form of publications obtainable from the OR Society.

Report on numerical based arguments

It is an unfortunate fact that, despite the many efforts that have been made to encourage executives to become more numerate, much resistance to the use of numerical arguments by decision-makers still remains. This research is concerned with how those involved in O.R. may learn from the past to become more successful at persuading decision-makers to accept and act on arguments based on numerical evidence.

Report on the graduate supply chain

Research commissioned by The OR Society shows that the school -> university -> OR job supply chain is highly dysfunctional. The Society's Education & Research Committee has accepted the findings of the research and is considering the recommendations contained in the researcher's report.

The report, titled 'Contingency Planning for the Future of OR Education' by Warren Gilchrist, is available for downloading  here.

Report on visioning the future of OR and The OR Society

The aim of this project was to involve interested parties in arriving at a well thought through answer to the question "what future do we want for the OR discipline, and the OR Society?", and to present the results back to the OR Society in a form that could support its future strategic development.

The report, titled 'Visioning the Future of OR' by Maureen Meadows and Frances O'Brien, is available for downloading here . The Appendices are available in a separate file, here
