Most of the research funding for fundamental Operational Research comes from two of the Research Councils EPSRC www.epsrc.ac.uk/Pages/default.aspx and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) www.esrc.ac.uk. Actual grants are awarded from a variety of schemes advertised by each Research Council.
The OR Society acts as a co-ordinator for nominations for expert panels for the different Research Councils and is a member of the Council for Mathematics Sciences www.cms.ac.uk which meets regularly with Research Council representatives to discuss research funding issues.
In addition, some of the EPSRC funding goes via The Centre for Discrete Mathematics and its Applications (DIMAP), http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/dimap. DIMAP was established in March 2007 by the University of Warwick, partially funded by an EPSRC Science and Innovation Award EP/D063191/1 of £3.8 million. It aims to support a thriving Industrial Affiliates Programme, and develop collaborative research rooted in discrete mathematics, involving researchers at other UK universities.
