OR for Developing Countries Special Interest Group

During the past 15 years there has been an increasing awareness of the problems faced by many developing countries, and a growing desire on the part of many to see if O.R. can be of help. The purpose of this Special Interest Group is to bring together such like-minded people, to hear what has been done and to debate what should and might be done.

This is not always easy. Regular meetings are difficult to arrange because for most of us this concern is not at the forefront of our professional activities, and therefore time and expenses are difficult to make available. Hence the focus for meetings is at the Society’s Annual Conference.

To keep things ticking over between such meetings, an irregular Newsletter is published and circulated to members. Unfortunately it is very irregular. Ideas and help would therefore be greatly appreciated.

You may be interested to read a typically provocative article by Jonathan Rosenhead entitled "Is O.R. local?".  It was published in April 1999's issue of OR/MS Today and can be found at http://lionhrtpub.com/ORMS.shtml along with other articles under the banner "Is O.R. global?" and case studies from a wide spectrum of countries.

For the latest on OR for Developing Countries, why not join the emailing list. Receive the news by email and circulate any messages of your own.
