Other Course Providers

In addition to the OR Society, alternative training providers run courses that may be of interest.

Royal Statistical Society training courses

RSS training courses aim to meet the needs of both statisticians and users of statistics. Presenters are experienced both in their field of expertise and as trainers and all courses are quality controlled. Courses are presented in an enjoyable setting at the RSS office in London. They offer special rates for members plus Early Bird discounts. Find their full list of current courses on their website.

Example Courses

  • Longitudinal and Missing Data
  • Questionnaire Design and Implementation for Web Surveys
  • Understanding and Analysing Data
  • Presenting Data
  • Advanced Programming in R
  • Multilevel Modelling

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

MOOCs are an increasingly popular teaching / learning channel.  They’re aimed at wide participation and open access via the web (as you might have guessed from the title!).  MOOCs make use of traditional course materials such as filmed / recorded lectures and exercises combined with interactive support communities of students and teachers.

At present, the OR Society has no plans to develop or launch its own MOOCs on O.R.-related topics.  There are, however, many MOOCs available that you might consider as part of your O.R. training and development plan.  These are easy to find and sign up for (and are generally free).  Stuart Roddam, of the Government O.R. Service’s Central Management Unit pulls together details of relevant MOOCs, and these details are presented below.  The OR Society does not endorse any of these courses, but provides this list for your information only.  Reviews of MOOCs are available on some of the course-provider sites.

The collection of links below (grouped by subject area) are to free online courses starting in January 2016.  More can be found on the Class Central website (https://www.class-central.com/).

Note:

  • You will have difficulty accessing some of these courses if you do not have an up to date web browser.
  • Udacity appear to be charging a fee for enrolling on some of their cour`ses.  However, they continue to allow completely free access to the learning materials themselves (videos, exercises, notes).  The only thing you won’t get is the interaction with a teacher.
