Introduction
Most organisations have difficulty accessing and interpreting
the wealth of information they hold in their many computer
systems. The following problems are all too common:
- available reports, taken from different systems, or run
at different times, are difficult to reconcile;
- running reports is slow, and degrades the performance
of critical operational systems;
- report users are unaware of the limitations and quality
of the data on which they are based;
- new reports and important ad hoc analyses have to wait
until expert IT staff have time to address them;
- combining data from different source systems is time-consuming
and prone to error.
This overview will introduce the idea of data warehousing,
and explain how it can help to solve the above problems. It
