First female winner of OR Society's Beale Medal

The Beale Medal, given in recognition of a sustained contribution to OR in the UK, was awarded to Professor Ailsa Land, a pioneer in branch and bound (an algorithm design paradigm for discrete and combinatorial optimisation problems, as well as mathematical optimisation). Her work in branch and bound reshaped the field of mathematical programming and its influence continues to this day.

Professor Land is the first female winner of the Beale Medal in the award's history.

Professor Land is also a pioneer in computational OR and for the past several decades has made outstanding contributions to the methodology and practice of OR in a variety of different problem domains. She was not able to attend this award giving ceremony so the award was accepted on her behalf by Gautam Appa.
