Careers & Training

Meet prospective employers and universities offering postgraduate courses that can lead to a career based in OR or analytics at our annual careers open day. The event includes a programme of informal presentations from OR practitioners at various stages in their careers and case study streams where graduates can listen to practitioners’ first hand experiences of life working in OR. Find out more on the careers open day pages.

Develop and learn new skills to boost your career on one of the society’s training courses. Information about job vacancies is provided within this site, some from organisations willing to receive job applications from student members who are about to graduate.

Visit the careers pages to find out more about working in operational research.

Accreditation

Student members can apply for CandORS accredited status on successful completion of an OR-based course. Our CandORS accreditation will signal to potential employers and to future clients that you have a strong analytical and problem solving background. As part of the offering, you will benefit from the allocation of a mentor who can offer advice on professional development.

OR publications

Stay up-to-date with current developments in OR through The OR Society publications. The society publishes and supplies a number of learned journals plus a popular monthly magazine called Inside OR. All of these are available online for members, and in print at an extra cost if requested.

Networking

The OR Society supports a number of regional societies and special interest groups. These enable members to network with other operational researchers in their area and to expand their knowledge in OR, the various regional societies and special interest groups organise meetings, works visits and other events from time to time in most of the major centres of population in the UK.

The society organises several conferences every year, from the annual conference which attracts delegates from around the world to one and two-day conferences on specialist topics. Every other year the society holds the New to OR conference, intended for academics and practitioners with less than ten years' experience in OR.

The society has members in over 50 countries so even if you are not planning on staying in the UK when you have finished your studies you can still remain a member and take advantage of the benefits.

Student members of The OR Society are offered discounted registration fees for OR Society conferences and training courses. Please refer to the fees information of a particular event for further details.
