How do we solve science’s problem with women?

Join us for an enlightening, empowering evening to explore the thorny questions of how science has failed women, and what can be done to solve the problems it has.
The evening will kick off with a talk by science journalist Angela Saini on the themes in her critically-acclaimed new book, Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong and the New Research That's Rewriting the Story. For centuries, scientists have told us that women are biologically inferior to men, that they are intellectually less capable, sexually more chaste, and naturally designed to be homemakers and caregivers. Angela has investigated the science behind the stereotypes and asks whether we need a radical overhaul of the way we think about women.
Following this will be a panel discussion looking at the issues that women still face working in science, and what can be done to solve the problems that exist, including sexism, harassment and bias in research. It will be chaired by the editor of the online magazine Mosaic, Chrissie Giles. Confirmed to be on the panel are the BBC Radio 4 science presenter and author of A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived, Adam Rutherford, the engineer behind the Shard and author of Built, Roma Agrawal and Royal Astronomical Society Fellow Dr. Emma Chapman. Other panellists to be revealed soon.
At the end of the evening will be a drinks reception, and an opportunity to network and learn about the diversity initiatives of some of the UK's leading scientific organisations, including the Wellcome, the Operational Research Society, the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, and the London Mathematical Society.

Following from the theme of the Blackette Lecture Pedro Baiz Villafranca from WisConT (a start-up company) will explore the link between Operational Research, Data Science and Internet of Things, an Infrastructure Asset Management Perspective
Wikipedia mentions that “Operational Research (OR) encompasses a wide range of problem-solving techniques and methods applied in the pursuit of improved decision-making and efficiency, such as simulation, mathematical optimization, queueing theory and other stochastic-process models, Markov decision processes, econometric methods, data envelopment analysis, neural networks, expert systems, decision analysis, and the analytic hierarchy process”. Many of these terms are now commonly used to describe the job of Data Scientists which brings the question of how are these fields related. Moreover, the increasing use of Internet of Things (connecting everything to the Internet) is affecting many of the major subdisciplines of OR such as Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management, Transportation, among many others. This talk will look at the convergence of some of these concepts from an Infrastructure Asset Management perspective (as defined by the IAM https://theiam.org/about). A range of case studies will be used to support the ideas presented

Every year, LASEORS arranges a summer get-together as a chance for everyone to get out and about and experience some of the fantastic sites, tours and festivals of London and the South East, all while spending time with like-minded and passionate Operational Researchers.

OR doesn’t often get a mention in a national government strategy document, so this statement from the 2014 NHS Five Year Forward View, the blueprint for redesign of the NHS, is both exciting and daunting. Charles was subsequently appointed to set up and lead the NHS England Operational Research and Evaluation Unit. His team is contributing to the transformation of the NHS, and evaluating the impact that new models of care being piloted are having. They are modelling how the changes are supposed to work, and testing these models using advanced analytical techniques.
Charles will talk about the pioneering approaches the team are taking and the impact that they are having on the issues and challenges facing the NHS, and how he’s come to see OR and evaluation as natural bed fellows.

People engaged in an activity like OR, can be described on countless dimensions. For example, personal characteristics (the 'protected characteristics' of ethnicity, gender etc. that are part of formal diversity initiatives, but also values, preferences, personality), daily work activities, customer, owner, career path, whether they have ever heard of OR Diversity can be a strength; but so can uniform identity. This talk reviews some significant dimensions of diversity and identity in UK OR, to consider what we might need to do to overcome the challenges of too much or too little diversity, and where we can exploit the enormous potential benefits of the glorious variety of ways of 'being an OR person'.

Musings on a career in Optimisation and AI

James has a long career in optimisation and AI. He studied CS, AI and Optimisation at Durham, publishing work on tracking multiple objects in CCTV footage using neural networks. He then spent many years working on and leading various cutting-edge routing and optimisation projects at Ocado, and now heads-up the optimisation and machine learning teams for BP’s commodities trading arm. His talk will focus on the trials and tribulations of running successful AI and optimisation projects (at a high level), touching on both broad algorithmic trends/gotchas, some of the frustrations, the soft-skills necessary to deliver value, along with topics that James finds of particular interest. The talk will end with an informal forward look/discussion of AI/optimisation.

Join us to see a special feature exhibit at the Science Museum about Analytics and big data. At the Science Museum’s Late this month there is a focus on big data, analytics and how that data is used to shape our lives. There will be a number of TfL’s analyst and Operational Researchers (amongst others) talking through in more detail how big data and analytics are used in their work and an opportunity to play some models not in the main exhibit.
The Late exhibition opens at 18:45 but there can be long queues to get in via the main entrance to the Science Museum on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, London, SW7 2DD. Nearest tube is South Kensington. Entrance is free to main exhibits and you must be over 18.

Health and social care workforce modelling at a national level

Dr Siôn Cave, of Decision Analysis Services (DAS) will talk about how System Dynamics has been integrated with methodologies such as scenario generation, horizon scanning and formal elicitation protocols to inform national workforce strategy. This approach will be described using examples from projects carried out by the Centre for Workforce Intelligence (CfWI). The CfWI is a key contributor to the planning of future workforce requirements for health, public health and social care in England. One project that will be described is Horizon 2035. Horizon 2035 is a project commissioned by the Department of Health which takes a whole system view of how challenges across the health and care system may unfold over the next 20 years in terms of workforce skills. Workforce in this programme has a broad definition that includes paid professionals such as doctors and nurses, as well as rarely considered informal workforces such as unpaid carers and volunteers.

Florence Nightingale might be best known for her nursing skills but, after her time in the Crimea, she used her mathematical and statistical knowledge to lobby parliament regarding the conditions in military hospitals presenting data in interesting and unusual ways.

What does ‘big data’ mean for OR? For many Operational Researchers our education was founded on ‘small data’ techniques. This carried over into our OR practice, where we were pleased if we could find reasonable samples of data to support our models. Big data may be changing all of that. In this talk we shall explore how big data could impact on our models and our modelling practice. In doing so we shall try and answer the following questions: What is big data? How does the world of OR fit with the world of big data, analytics and data science? What role might big data play in our modelling efforts? And, does big data challenge our very conception of the ‘OR methodology’?

The OR Society’s Third Sector initiative has two main components: a Special Interest Group, and a Pro Bono scheme, matching OR volunteers with third sector organisations needing their input. But is there really any difference between doing OR in the third sector and doing it with a government or private sector organisation? Is “it’s for charity” really a good enough reason to work for free? This talk explores these challenges, taking charities as an example of third sector organisations.

Forecasting demand for London 2012 and what really happened then and since

A presentation on the demand forecasts developed for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. This process covered the London Underground, London Overground and Dockland Light Railway networks, bringing together multiple data sources to represent the overall transport system. With the Games now over, the presentation will also focus on the rare opportunity to use actual data to review the accuracy of a complex forecasting process, and thus highlight lessons to be learned. I will also talk about work we have been doing with the same models since then on major impacting projects.
There will be an opportunity for further discussion after the talk, in the Marquis Cornwallis on Marchmont Street.
