Inside O.R. November 2013

Abstract

This month’s cover story focusses on the beliefs of a Swansea academic that simulation can improve and speed up the design process of many mechanical, electronic and aeronautical components, and that building virtual prototypes could dramatically reduce R&D costs. If he’s right, what role would O.R. have in this? Tucked away on page 8 is an ‘advert’ for an event on 12 December in London. It’s part of one of the Society’s charitable projects looking at how we, the O.R. community, can increase the part O.R. can and should be playing in policy science. This is clearly an area where O.R is important, and encourage as many of you as possible to come along to find out more. Imogen Dunne, a student at Cardiff University, reports on work she and four others did as part of the OR Ambassadors in Schools project over the summer (which, sadly, seems a long time ago). The group created some fantastic resources for teachers to use to get school kids engaged with O.R., and their activities were extremely well received by both teachers and pupils alike.
