The ORS Training Working Group: What and Who?

The society runs dozens of training courses every year for its members. Ever wonder who decides what courses should run? Read on to find out more about this and how you can influence the future training offerings of The OR Society:

The Training Working Group (TWG) is a sub-Committee of the Events Committee (EC). This small group is responsible for identifying, commissioning, reviewing and publicising OR Society training as well as the day to day running of the training and the associated data collection, admin and forward management of the programme.

The TWG currently has five members Martin Keys (Chair), David Basterfield and Mik Winiewski plus Gavin Blackett and Jennie Phelps from the ORS central office. More about the first three members (Gavin and Jennie are probably well known to you already!) can be found below:

Please Note: The TWG is always pleased to hear from you the members, at any time, with suggestions about topics that might be included in the ORS training programme going forward, that are not already covered in the existing offering. The current ORS training programme is available online.

Please let us have your views on other potential topics or any other aspect by contacting Jennie Phelps at The OR Society office.

Martin Keys

Martin was educated at the Universities of East Anglia and Leicester: BSc in Physics and Mathematics and an MSc in Experimental Space Physics, respectively. So he knows what’s not rocket science! From 1981 Martin worked in the MOD as an Operational Analyst. Over his time within the MOD he had increasing managerial responsibilities and involvement in human resourcing/business management issues. Martin retired from Dstl in March 2016 as a Principal Analyst.

Martin is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (Chartered MCIPD) and a Fellow of the ORS (FORS) and Chairman of the ORS Training Working Group. Martin is currently a member of ORS General Council and the Events Sub-Committee and he has been a member of the organising Committee of the ORS annual conference twice in recent years. Martin was also a member of the sub-Committee which looked into Chartered Scientist status for ORS members.

David Basterfield

Following his MSc at Lancaster, David has worked for a variety of organisations applying OR techniques to problems in transportation, telecoms, manufacturing and energy. He currently leads the forecasting team at a large energy supplier applying analytics to forecast demand from domestic consumers through to some of the largest companies in the UK. He is passionate about helping people to develop to their full potential which led him to volunteer to join the training working group.

Mik Winiewski

In addition to a background of almost 40 years’ experience of management training and development, Mik has considerable consultancy and managerial expertise in the areas of strategy, business planning and performance measurement in both the public and private sectors. As well as working across much of Europe, Mik has also worked in Africa, Asia and the Gulf region.

He has also worked at a number of universities in the UK and overseas and has particular interests in management decision making and organisational performance measurement. He has degree from Loughborough and Birmingham Universities and is a Fellow of The Operational Research Society.
