Women in OR & Analytics Network

The Women in OR & Analytics Network is a network for female OR practitioners and academics.

The gender imbalance in OR and STEM in general still presents many challenges both for academics and practitioners.

Whilst there is a lot of literature about the low proportions of women in STEM careers, no work had specifically been undertaken on the UK OR profession until 2018 when The OR Society sponsored three MSc research projects on the theme of women in OR.

Key findings from the three projects concluded that The OR Society should establish a network for women at work in OR and analytics to build strong, encouraging connections.

We need you

We need your voice, your knowledge and your experience in this group. Help us to build a strong, self-supporting network and to set better conditions for the next cohort of young women launching into their careers in OR and analytics.

WORAN Book Discussion: Inferior, by Angela Saini

21 March 2024, 13.30 - 14.30

register here

Inferior aims to explore what science actually says about men and women and what is the true extent of the sex differences between us. It has been described as "a significant contribution to the current ongoing conversation about gender equality and the representation of women in STEM fields", presenting evidence that undermines long-held beliefs about the differences, and showing how contemporary research is now challenging the traditional narrative about the differences between men and women. It is also a rattling good read.

In this Zoom meeting, we will start off with a brief overview of the book, and then break into small groups to discuss key questions that the book raises, before returning to plenary and general feedback. The questions will be accessible whether or not you have read the book, and if you haven't had time to read it beforehand, there's a good chance that the discussion will inspire you to seek it out.

(If you do try to get hold of a copy to read in advance, it may help to know that there are two versions of the title ("Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong and the New Research That’s Rewriting the Story" and "Inferior: The true power of women and the science that shows it"); but it's the same book.)

Presence and Personal Impact – a workshop

Piers Ibbotson, Business Trainer/Consultant, and Associate Professor, Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Warwick Business School

18 April 2024, 13.30-14.30

Face-to-face meetings, conversations, negotiations, pitches and presentations are places where work is finally done – and where real problems can be encountered. This practical and interactive session will look at the act of live communication. What is your effect on others? How do relative status and status games influence the way you respond to people – and how people respond to you?

We will work on confident and high impact communication both one-on-one and in larger groups.

  • Presence and gravitas – how to recognise them, own them and understand how we give them away.
  • To develop broader self awareness of personal authority and the choices that are available.
  • To practise working with a broader ‘bandwidth’ of styles to build rapport and have impact.
  • To highlight the link between authority, status and power in live, face-to-face communication with a focus on how gender differences may appear.

About the speaker

Piers Ibbotson was among the first to bring the insights and skills of artists into the world of business and has a wealth of experience and insight developed over a 30 year career. He trained originally as a geologist and worked in the oil industry for a number of years before entering the theatre in 1980 where he had a successful career as a performer, before becoming an Assistant Director and beginning his work with business. In 2008 he published “The Illusion of Leadership” (Palgrave Macmillan) – a collection of essays on his work with business.
