OR Society Early Career Researcher Workshop

Mark your calendar for the Operational Research Society Early Career Researcher (ECR) Network workshop! The event will take place on 10th-11th September at the University of Bath, just before OR65, our Annual Conference, 2023.

This workshop is a great opportunity for ECRs in OR to connect with their peers, gain valuable insights, and learn about key opportunities to establish successful research careers. You will have a chance to hear from leading academics on reviewing academic papers and receive essential advice for publishing your papers. You will gain insight into available grants, how to make a successful application and hear from leading grant holders and EPSRC. In addition, you will have the opportunity to participate in mock panels to assess real grant applications, present a poster and participate in structured networking activities.

Lunch and dinner will be provided. Registration cost for Sunday and Monday of this workshop is £60.00 plus VAT. The full OR65 conference ticket can be added on for a discounted price of £329.00 plus VAT when purchasing your ticket for this ECR workshop.

Accommodation cost is £46 or £61 plus VAT per night. Participants will be eligible for a discount to attend the full OR65 conference (excluding students). Registration will open during April. We encourage you to register early to secure your spot in this valuable and informative workshop. If you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We look forward to you joining us for this exciting event.

Title: On the construction of optimal policies for the serial resource-constrained project scheduling problem with stochastic activity durations

The majority of publications in the extensive literature on resource-constrained project scheduling problems (RCPSPs) focus on a static deterministic setting for which a so-called baseline schedule is computed prior to project execution. In the real world, however, a project may be subject to considerable uncertainty. During the actual execution of a project, the baseline schedule may indeed suffer from disruptive events causing the actually realized activity start times to deviate from the predicted baseline start times. This talk will consider a serial project scheduling problem, where the durations of the activities can take on two possible durations. For that particular case, we will determine the optimal policies and we will infer rules that can be useful in order to construct better schedules for the general RCPSP.

Erik Demeulemeester is a Professor in the Research Center for Operations Management at the KU Leuven.

His main research interests are in project scheduling and healthcare planning, and he has published many papers on these topics. He currently belongs to the editorial board of the European Journal of Operational Research, the Journal of Scheduling, Computers & Operations Research and the European Journal of Industrial Engineering.
