Professor Carole Mundell

Biography:

Carole Mundell was the UK’s first ever Chief International Science Envoy, and the first female Chief Scientific Adviser at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. She was named FDM ‘Everywoman in Technology Woman of the Year’ in 2016. She has been active in campaigning and whistleblowing about sexual harassment in higher education.

Carole is currently Professor of Extra-Galactic Astronomy and founding Head of Astrophysics at the University of Bath, and President of the Science Council, the grouping of scientific learned societies of which the ORS is a member.  

The 2022 WORAN Land Lecture took the form of a ‘fireside chat’. Prof Sally Brailsford explored Carole’s views and experiences on issues such as forging a career in a male-dominated discipline, the contrast in culture and working conditions between academia, government and elsewhere, and how we respond to bullying, harassment, or discrimination in the workplace; and encouraging the audience to do likewise.
