Call for Papers on DEI in OR/MS classrooms

INFORMS (the Institute for Operational Research and Management Science) has announced a Call for Papers for a special issue of INFORMS Transactions on Education, focused on "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in OR/MS Classrooms".

Writing for INFORMS, Professor of Mathematics Susan Martonosi (Harvey Mudd College) said:

“An important goal for our profession is to foster a diverse and robust pipeline of next-generation operations researchers and management scientists who can successfully tackle the world's complex problems. Instructors are therefore presented with two key challenges.

“First, within an OR/MS classroom, the instructor must provide a course structure and classroom environment that is welcoming and inclusive of students from diverse backgrounds.

“Second, instructors must equip students with the modeling and problem-solving skills that allow them to identify and mitigate sources of algorithmic bias, avoid decision-making that yields disparate impacts across different groups, and identify problems to solve and approaches to solve them with all stakeholders in mind.”

INFORMS intends that the new special issue will contribute to the literature on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in OR/MS education through the dissemination of best practices for inclusive pedagogy tailored to the OR/MS classroom context and through the curation of classroom materials that embed issues of equity, social justice and discrimination into the OR/MS modeling and problem-solving process. INFORMS is particularly interested in papers that address teaching core OR/MS concepts at the undergraduate and graduate level.
