Design Research: Three Illustrations

Abstract

In recent years engineering design has been studied from multiple research perspectives using a number of different methodological approaches, drawing for example on traditions from the social sciences as well as engineering. This presentation will first present a broad overview of these perspectives and approaches, including a framework of a widely-used ‘design research methodology’ before describing three examples of design research broadly representing method and tool development, the study of individual designers and the study of design teams.
