Target Build Life and Variance Reduction

Abstract

In leasing agreements in which the customer is charged a fixed rate for each hour the system is used over extended periods of 10 years or more, it is important for the lessor to achieve a balance between the amount of opportunistic maintenance performed and the expected time to next maintenance action. This balance can best be achieved using the concept of a target build life but only if a reasonably high proportion of the times to failure are age-related. This paper illustrates the potential benefits that can be gained by measuring the age in the most appropriate units (e.g. stress cycles versus hours).
