Funding boost for mathematical sciences institutes announced

Three of the UK’s leading research institutes have been awarded funding to widen access to mathematical sciences and support training through funding.

The investment was received by the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), the Isaac Newton Institute (INI) and the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research (HIMR) to advance the mathematical sciences through a wide range of activities supporting education and training.

The funding boost was part of the £300 million government investment in the Additional Funding Programme for Mathematical Sciences, which was announced in 2020. It will allow the institutions to increase capacity, increase the engagement of the mathematical sciences community and facilitate state-of-the-art research.

The funding will be delivered by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) over a five-year period.

EPSRC Executive Chair, Professor Dame Lynn Gladden, said: “The Isaac Newton Institute, the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences and the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research are internationally respected, flagship investments in the UK’s mathematical sciences community.

“This funding will support them to continue providing high quality research and knowledge exchange activities.

“It will also enable the Isaac Newton Institute and the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences to increase participation across the UK and further promote engagement with mathematical sciences communities around the world.”

A total of £35 million will be delivered to the three institutions from 2021 to 2025.

Executive Director of the OR Society, Gavin Blackett, said: “This is a huge boost for the whole of mathematical sciences, and OR is in a great place to benefit from this extra injection of funding.”
