The OR Society awards: calls and deadlines

Each year, The OR Society celebrates and recognises advancements and successes with a selection of curated medals, scholarships, and awards. Celebrating everything from early career excellence and innovative projects to long-standing professional achievements.

These awards are open for submissions throughout the year, on a rolling programme, and applications can be made on the following dates. See below for the full list and details on how to apply.

Beale Medal

Recognising a sustained contribution over many years to the theory, practice, or philosophy of OR in the UK, or to some combination of those areas.

Deadline for submissions 30 April 2023

Companionship or OR

Awarded for sustained support and encouragement for the development of operational research or for those in influential positions who are in broad sympathy with the subject area. Such contributions might be through public or private activities.

Doctoral Award

The award, for the 'Most Distinguished Body of Research leading to the Award of a Doctorate in the field of OR', is an annual award, with the award being made at The OR Society’s Blackett Lecture in November.

May Hicks Award

The OR Society funds its annual awards for student projects from a generous bequest from the estate of Mrs May Hicks, wife of Donald Hicks OBE, a major contributor to operational research and the first treasurer of The OR Society. Projects entered are OR projects carried out for a client organisation rather than within the university.

Lyn Thomas Impact Medal

The Lyn Thomas Impact Medal is awarded annually for the academic OR research which best demonstrates both novelty and real-world impact, backed up by evidence. Impact can be of many forms including societal, economic, cultural, entertainment, health related, political, quality of life, etc.

Presidents’ Medal

One of The OR Society’s most prestigious awards, The President’s Medal is awarded for the best practical application of OR submitted to the competition (a wide definition of OR is used). Entries are welcomed from both industry based OR workers and consultants as well as from academics.
